The people of Sudan have been living in the midst of a brutal armed conflict for years. With foreigners having left the country and communications often disrupted, it is difficult for the outside world to obtain accurate information about what is happening. The conflict in Sudan has been called the "forgotten war."
"For the poor will not always be forgotten, nor will the hope of the poor perish forever." Psalm 9:18
A humanitarian nightmare
Sudan has a population of 48 million, half of whom are in need of humanitarian aid. The United Nations describes the situation in Sudan as a "humanitarian nightmare." Aid agencies say that the war has led to the world's worst displacement crisis.
Ready to make sacrifices
More than eight million people have fled their homes since April last year. Around two million are refugees in neighboring countries, while camps and temporary shelters are the only option for many others. These are overcrowded, leading to problems with security, disease, and malnutrition. Amidst the violent power struggle in the country, workers tell us that people are disillusioned with their political and religious leaders.
Sudan is more than 90 percent Muslim. People who become followers of Jesus face opposition from their families and communities. But now, as Sudanese Christians open their homes and share what they have, people are eager to learn what it means to follow Christ.
The great harvest
Until now, Sudan's main source of income was agriculture, but the war has brought the country to the brink of famine. Farmland has been abandoned because people have had to flee, crops have not been sown, and supplies from other countries are logistically complicated and very expensive.
Followers of Jesus in Sudan have started an agricultural project to provide food, jobs, and mentoring opportunities for families in need. OM is involved in supporting 130 local workers who are operating in this way in conflict-affected areas. We are seeking to raise funds for their upkeep so that they can continue this much-needed work.
Join us in prayer:
- For a lasting end to violence and suffering in Sudan
- To meet the basic needs of people who are hungry and homeless
- About a small Christian community that, despite oppression, patiently shows love to its neighbors, regardless of their religion.
- To restore hope in people and a better future for this country
