Through the service of two ships, Logos Hope and Doulos Hope, we share knowledge, bring help and hope to people from different nations.
It was completely innovative, born as part of a worldwide missionary movement started by George Verwer and his friends. Since then, we have launched five ships (Logos, Doulos, Logos II, Logos Hope, Doulos Hope), which have visited a total of more than 480 ports in more than 150 countries, and welcomed more than 50 million guests on board. Two OM ships are currently active: the largest in our history, Logos Hope, and the more intimate Doulos Hope.
The purpose of the ships' service is to bring help, knowledge and hope to people from all nations. This is done by spreading literature (Logos Hope is, among other things, the world's largest floating bookstore!), promoting understanding across cultural barriers, training young people for fruitful living and service, providing humanitarian aid and, whenever possible, sharing the Good News of Jesus.
The ship spends several weeks in each port and during this time receives visitors - sometimes thousands of people a day. On average, more than a million people are hosted on board the ships each year! Floating bookstores offer 5,000 different titles - a unique opportunity in many countries to stock up on cheap, quality educational and Christian literature.
The ship is home to an international team of volunteers who carry out humanitarian and evangelization projects ashore in smaller groups while in port. Volunteers from the ship work in cooperation with local NGOs and Christian churches, striving to show love and bring hope to all people, regardless of life circumstances, race or background. For many years, Poles have also served aboard the ships.
It is twice the size of earlier OM ships and is the first to undergo such a major refit to accommodate missionary purposes. It provides opportunities for varied programs for large groups of visitors and many chances for more intimate gatherings. Volunteers occupy 200 cabins that can accommodate up to 500 residents, including families with children. On board, there is a canteen, a medical clinic, and a school, among other things - a true global village, with crew coming from dozens of different countries. The word "logos" (Greek) means Word.
Building on the legacy of service of our previous ship Doulos (1977-2010) and complementing the reach of the ship Logos Hope, our newest ship, is named Doulos Hope! It began operations in 2023, in response to the need for greater mobility and deeper ties with local communities. The word "doulos" comes from Greek and means servant, so this ship is intended to be a "servant of hope."
The volunteer program lasts one or two years. You'll be part of a young, international team and visit more than a dozen countries, doing full-time work in, for example, the galley, engine room, bookstore or housekeeping team. Once a week, each volunteer engages in programs in port or ashore, and from time to time the crew leaves the ship in smaller groups to conduct outreach projects in local communities.
You'll participate in courses and training, develop talents, deepen your relationship with God and make friends with people from
all over the world. Hard work and many challenges await you, as well as indescribable joy - you will see how people's lives change. Yours too!
Do you want to get to know our ships better and try service in all areas of their activities? The STEP program, which lasts 3 months, will enable you to do so!
